You can find various websites where you can play backgammon with other players. Many sites have a rating system in which players' game skills are rated and matched against their opponents. Rating is useful when you are looking for an opponent with, roughly, the same skills and ability as yours, or, when you are looking for a challenge - someone who can teach you a thing or two.
Some sites offer you to play for money which can be fun if you feel skillful and ready. In others no money involved in the game itself, but they can offer you to join a paying "premium" player with monthly fees and some benefits that regular player lacks. A third "crossbreed" are sites that allow you to play for "virtual money" (which actually never ends.) and when you decide you are "ripened" enough, you can start playing with real money.

There are sites that use Java to run the game interface, with no need to download any additional application. Others ask you to download a client which is a dedicated program for playing Backgammon on the net. The later are usually somewhat faster and more sophisticated with more "bells and whistles".
