Backgammon tournaments are held both on-line and in real, "face to face" environment. Every site and club holding tournaments, publish a set of rules (Tournament Rules). The various rule sets are quite similar. You can see examples for typical rules in the links at the end of the page. Usually a tournament is divided along several level based divisions, to give room to players with different experience and skill. Typical division is Novice, Intermediate and Open or Championship. Each division differs in details like entry fees, prizes, minimal rank, etc. Instead of "games", backgammon tournaments usually played by "matches" - series of games "worth" at least one point each. The object in tournament play is to collect the predefined number of points and win the match. For example, resolving a 5-point match can take just a single game or as many as nine games.
